Thomas Barfield is professor of anthropology at Boston University and president of the American Institute for Afghanistan Studies. He is the author of several books, including Afghanistan: An Atlas of Indigenous Domestic Architecture and The Perilous Frontier: Nomadic Empires and China, 221 BC to AD 1757. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2007 to support his latest book, Afghanistan: A Cultural and Political History.
